Bob Bashara pleaded guilty as charged this afternoon to solicitation to murder Joseph Gentz, the man accused of killing Bashara’s wife.
Bashara read a statement in Wayne County Circuit Court saying that in June, he “foolishly and regrettably” tried to hire someone to kill Gentz, who is being held in the Wayne County Jail on charges of killing Jane Bashara in January.
Bob Bashara admitted he tried to hire Detroit appliance dealer Steve Tibaudo to carry out Gentz’s killing. Tibaudo earlier testified he secretly recorded conversations of Bashara soliciting the hit.
Bashara was in court today for a pretrial hearing, in advance of his trial set for next month. Prosecutors have said Bashara of Grosse Pointe Park tried to have Gentz killed because he didn’t want him to testify at any future hearings, should that opportunity arise.
Gentz, who did repair work at Bashara’s rental properties, told police he killed Jane Bashara in January at her husband’s direction. She was found Jan. 25 strangled in her luxury SUV, which had been dumped in an east side Detroit alley.
Gentz has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy charges. He waived his preliminary examination in Detroit’s 36th District Court and is set to be arraigned on Wayne County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
Bob Bashara has been called a person of interest in his wife’s death by police but has not been charged.
Sentencing in the solicitation case was set for Nov. 20.
