An Oakland County jury has returned a guilty verdict in the case of a young man accused of killing an Oak Park police officer.
Eighteen-year-old Jonathan Belton was found guilty of murder.
The verdict was read this morning in Circuit Judge Rae Lee Chabot’s courtroom.
Prosecutors say Belton stole Mason Samborski’s gun and shot the officer in the head during a struggle at an apartment building nearly two years ago.
Samborski was taking the then-16-year-old Belton to the building after stopping him in a car with no driver’s license.
Defense attorney Geoffrey Fieger says Samborski accidentally shot himself.
