“Terrence Anthony-Thomas Cato faces sentencing for one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct with force or coercion, a two-year felony, one count of aggravated assault and one count of disorderly person obscene conduct. Southfield attorney Colin Andrew Daniels of Neil Rockind PC is counsel of record for the defendant.”

You have got to love the media…they left out the most important part: the Criminal Sexual Conduct count (the only felony charge), was dismissed! Initially, the prosecutor was insistent that Mr. Cato plead guilty to the felony and register as a sex offender on the sexual offender registry. From the get-go we knew that Mr. Cato was innocent of such a charge and we told the prosecutor that there was no way we were going to allow Mr. Cato to plead to such a ridiculous charge!
Eventually we asked the Judge to set the case for trial. In the interim, we decided that it would benefit Mr. Cato to submit some letters of support on his behalf to the prosecutor’s office in an attempt to elicit a reduced charge. In all, we submitted nearly 20 letters of support and in a shocking display of humility, the prosecutor’s office agreed to completely drop the felony charge and further agreed that a place on the sexual offender registry was not appropriate for Mr. Cato.
After months of battling with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, we were able to achieve a resolution that included only 2 misdemeanor counts. Not all cases have such a fortunate outcome, but we believe that it was our grit, determination, and hard work that led to us achieving such a fantastic result!
