City: No Medical Marijuana Businesses

WESTLAND, Mich. — Westland’s City Council unanimously approved a proposal Monday to adopt an ordinance that would ban medical marijuana businesses.

The ordinance would ban dispensaries from operating within the city.

Michigan approved medical marijuana in 2008, allowing patients who have been issued an identification card to cultivate up to 12 marijuana plants and possess up to 2.5 ounces of the drug. Patients are also allowed to purchase marijuana from licensed professionals who grow the plant.

“The city has made a choice of prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries based that their existence within the city would be detrimental from a public safety standpoint as well as the negative effect on surrounding neighborhoods” Westland’s Mayor William Wild said. “Similar ordinances have been recently enacted in surrounding communities such as Livonia and Canton Township in response to these same concerns.”

The adoption of the ordinance will be taken up again at the City Council’s meeting on Aug. 2.

  1. I think almost any substance can be abused and that it’s ridiculous that marijuana is illegal when it is much less dangerous when it is abused than when alcohol is. http://stonerdiary.wordpress.com
